Custom Furniture for Bedrooms: A Dressing Room From a Bay
Custom Furniture turns an unused bedroom bay into a walk-in dressing room without knocking down a wall. In many Singapore flats that recess by the window or the L-shape near the door is dead space; close it with joinery and you get a proper changing area with rails, mirrors and drawers.
Spotting the Bay You Can Use
The bay often sits at the window end of a 5-room HDB bedroom around 110 sqm, or as a small alcove off the master in a condo. You need about 1.2m of depth and 1.5m of width to stand and turn. In a 4-room flat the bay may be slimmer, so we build a single-sided run rather than a full walk-in.
Survey the space for:
- The bay width and how deep it goes from the room.
- Any window in the bay that must stay clear as an escape.
- Power points for a mirror light or a steamer.
Custom Furniture Plan for a Dressing Bay
We line the bay with **floor-to-ceiling plywood carcasses** and a laminate face, leaving the centre open so you step in. One side gets a full-length mirror and a hanging rail; the other gets drawers and a tilt-out shoe shelf. A curtain or a sliding panel closes it off when you want privacy.
Steps we follow:
- Map your items so rail, shelf and drawer space match your wardrobe.
- Keep the window unblocked for the HDB escape rule.
- Fit a soft-close sliding panel rather than a swing door.
- Add a dimmable light on a separate switch for early mornings.
Materials for a Closed, Damp Edge
A dressing bay sits near glass and holds clothes, so we use **moisture-resistant plywood** with laminate finishes. Solid wood can cup near the window in our humidity. MDF is fine for drawer fronts kept dry. Laminate wipes clean and resists the deodorant marks that build up on shelves.

- Plywood: stable, our carcass standard.
- Laminate: easy care, wide finishes.
- MDF: smooth fronts, keep dry.
- Solid wood: rich look, more upkeep.
Cost, Timeline and Guidelines
A dressing bay from a standard recess runs roughly S$3,000 to S$7,000 depending on fittings and lighting. From measure to install, allow **6 to 10 weeks**: a week to survey, two to three weeks to design, then four to six weeks in the workshop.
HDB guidelines treat the bay joinery as built-in furniture, so no permit for the carpentry, but don't block the window escape route or fix into a structural wall or the bomb shelter. New flats come with a **1-year defect liability period** for wall defects behind the unit. Condo MCSTs generally allow the work, with weekday noise limits and a renovation deposit held until inspection.
Upkeep and Resale Upside
Wipe shelves quarterly, vacuum the floor of the bay, and check the sliding panel track. A dressing room from a bay photographs as a luxury touch, and buyers often value a home where the master bedroom already has a dedicated place to dress.
If your bedroom bay is just where the ironing board lives, turning it into a dressing area is a calm way to reclaim that corner and make getting ready feel a little less rushed.
