Custom Furniture Materials: Why Plywood Beats the Humidity

carpentry 19 min read 0 views

For Custom Furniture in Singapore, plywood is the material that holds up best against our humidity. It's layered cross-grain, so it barely moves when the air turns sticky, while solid wood warps and MDF swells. If you want cabinets that stay square for a decade, start with the board.

How plywood is actually built

Plywood isn't one slab of wood. It's sheets of thin veneer glued with the grain turned 90 degrees at every layer. That criss-cross is the trick. When moisture tries to push the board one way, the next layer fights it.

Good cabinet-grade plywood here is usually Birch or hardwood core, 12mm to 18mm thick for carcasses. The face gets a laminate or veneer on top, so you never see the layers except at the edge. A decent 18mm board feels solid and doesn't ring hollow when you knock it.

  • Cross-grain layering cancels out the natural movement of wood.
  • Structural strength lets you span wider without a centre post.
  • Stable dimensions mean doors hang straight year after year.

Why our weather is the real test

Singapore sits at about 80% average humidity, and that doesn't drop much even in "dry" months. Solid wood drinks that moisture and expands; let it dry and it shrinks. Do that a few hundred times and a door no longer closes. MDF is worse near sinks because once the edge seals fail, it just balloons.

Plywood moves a fraction of that. In a 4-room HDB of roughly 90 sqm, the kitchen and two bathrooms throw a lot of moisture into the air. Plywood carcasses in those zones are the safe call. You'll still want good edge sealing, but the core won't betray you.

Custom Furniture board choices compared

People ask me about the three common boards. Here's the plain version:

  • Solid wood looks lovely and ages with character, but it's pricey and fussy in our climate unless it's properly kiln-dried and finished. Great for a feature table, risky for full-height wardrobes.
  • MDF is smooth and cheap and paints well, yet it hates water. Fine for bedroom pieces away from wet areas.
  • Plywood sits in the middle on cost and wins on durability. That's why most local workshops default to it for carcasses.

For a 5-room HDB around 110 sqm, the saving from choosing plywood over solid wood across the whole home can be several thousand dollars, and you lose almost nothing in daily use.

What to ask your workshop

Don't just say "plywood." Get specifics so you know what you're paying for.

  1. Ask for the grade and thickness — 18mm for base cabinets, 12mm for adjustable shelves is a fair rule.
  2. Check the edge banding. A PVC or acrylic edge glued properly keeps moisture out of the core.
  3. Look at the certification. CARB or FSC markings tell you the glue is low-emission, which matters in a sealed HDB bedroom.
  4. Request a sample offcut to feel the weight and see the ply count. Fewer, thicker plies usually mean a weaker board.

Keeping it honest on cost

Plywood carcasses typically add roughly 15% to 25% over MDF for the same layout. Against solid wood the gap is far wider. Spread across a whole-house job budgeted at S$30k to S$70k for a full renovation, that plywood premium is a small number that buys a lot of peace of mind.

Most HDB flats come with a one-year defect liability period after handover, but that covers the building, not your carpentry. Your workshop's own warranty is what protects the plywood work, so get it in writing before you pay the balance.

If you're weighing materials for a home that has to survive our weather without constant fixing, plywood is the quiet winner. It won't impress anyone at a dinner party the way solid teak might, yet your wardrobe doors will still shut properly long after the honeymoon period of a new flat ends. When you sit down to plan the carpentry, asking for plywood carcasses as the baseline is one of the simplest decisions you can make well.
