Custom Furniture at bathroom: Our Humid Months, Handled
Custom Furniture is what keeps a bathroom calm through our humid months, because a made-to-measure vanity and shelf shrug off the moisture that wrecks off-the-shelf pieces. We redid ours and the mould finally stopped coming back.
Why humidity ruins standard bathroom furniture
Singapore sits at high humidity most of the year, and a bathroom after a hot shower is the worst spot in the flat. Particle board cabinets from a department store swell at the edges within a year. We watched it happen and decided to build for the climate instead.
The trick is picking materials that don't care about water and sealing every cut edge. A custom piece lets you do both, because the carpenter treats the board before it goes in.
Custom Furniture built for moisture
We planned the bathroom around what actually gets wet. The vanity base sits off the floor on a plinth, and the open shelf stays away from the shower spray. The build broke down like this.
A plywood carcass with a waterproof laminate skin, since plywood holds its shape where MDF would bubble and crumble.
Soft-close drawers with aluminium runners that don't rust, instead of the steel ones that stain within a season.
A stone top with the edges sealed, so water pools and wipes rather than seeping into the join.

Ventilated toe space under the unit, letting air move so the floor beneath stays dry.
Materials and what they cost
Solid wood in a bathroom is a gamble unless it's teak or chengal and oiled often, so we skipped it. Plywood with laminate was the sensible middle, roughly S$120 a sheet, against MDF at S$60 that we knew would fail.
The stone top added about S$500, and the hardware another S$200. All in, the custom vanity ran S$2,200 with labour, against a S$900 flat-pack that wouldn't have lasted.
Timeline and the HDB rules
From measure to install took about eight weeks. Bathroom pieces wait behind bigger orders in the workshop, so plan ahead if you're doing a full reno where the six-to-ten-week window already applies.

HDB lets you replace a bathroom vanity freely, but moving plumbing needs a licensed plumber and the work should sit within your reno permit. Condo MCST bodies often require waterproofing proof and a fixed renovation window, so lodge the paperwork before the carpenter starts.
Care and resale value

We wipe surfaces daily and leave the door ajar after showers so the air clears. Once a month we check the silicone line and redo it if it yellows. That routine is the whole maintenance story.
A dry, mould-free bathroom is something buyers notice in a 5-room flat around 110sqm, where the second bath gets heavy use. We didn't build it to flip the place, but a clean bathroom does quiet the doubts at viewing time.
Our humid months still arrive, but the bathroom no longer fights them. That alone was worth the wait.
