Custom Furniture at penthouse: A Mug Tree That Stows
Custom Furniture at penthouse level should still earn its place, and a mug tree that stows is a small piece with a big payoff. Even with the square footage a penthouse gives you, the morning bench gets cluttered with cups, and a tree that folds into the cabinet keeps the counter clean when guests aren't around. It's the kind of detail that suits a larger home.
Why a penthouse needs the same trick
People assume a penthouse means endless counter space, but the open-plan kitchen still has one prep zone that collects mugs, keys, and the mail. A stow tree holds six to eight cups on a vertical spiral, then drops flat into a 10cm cabinet slot when the cleaner comes or you want the line clear.
It also suits the entertaining pace up there. Pull it out for a brunch of ten, tuck it away for the quiet Tuesday. The kitchen looks intentional either way.
How we build the stow slot

We cut a narrow vertical cavity in the end of the island or the tall cabinet, roughly 12cm deep and 40cm wide, with a face that matches the door grain. The tree sits on a pivot at the base; lift and swing it in, close the panel, done. The cups stay inside, dust-free, until you need them.
Keep the tree under 4kg so the pivot doesn't strain. A slim steel spine with wooden pegs does the job without bulk.
Materials that match the address
Solid wood pegs read warmest and suit a premium kitchen, but seal them or the humidity near the kettle will raise the grain. Teak or walnut are the usual picks.
Plywood with a laminate skin keeps the slot light and the face consistent with the cabinet. Practical and clean.
MDF is fine for the slot face if painted, but not the tree itself, it cracks at the pivot with repeated folding.
Laminate on the surrounding cabinet gives a wipe-clean edge that holds up to daily kitchen traffic.
Cost and the build schedule
A custom stow mug tree with its slot runs on average S$200 to S$480, on top of the cabinet it lives in. Modest next to a penthouse reno, though those budgets run well above the S$30k to S$70k of a standard flat.
From measure to install, about 6 to 10 weeks as part of the kitchen carpentry. The slot is cut during the cabinet build, so order it together rather than retrofitting later.
Custom Furniture and condo MCST rules
Custom Furniture at penthouse level still falls under the condo MCST, but an internal mug tree is interior and needs no approval. Where MCST rules bite is on facade changes and structural cuts, neither of which a cabinet slot involves. Just don't route the slot into a fire-rated wall without the management's say-so.
For resale, a penthouse lives or dies on perceived order. A kitchen that hides its clutter sells faster than one that shows every cup. The tree is a small signal that the home is considered down to the last inch.
Your mugs shouldn't own the counter. Build the tree to disappear, pull it out when the crowd lands, and the penthouse kitchen stays as composed at eight as it does at eight-thirty. Small piece, clear bench, that's the whole point.
