Custom Furniture by sideboard: A Cat Ladder in the Cabinet

carpentry 17 min read 0 views

Custom Furniture by the sideboard can solve a pet problem most people miss, a cat ladder built into the cabinet so your cat reaches the top without clawing the doors. In a 4-room HDB of about 90sqm the sideboard is often the tallest perch available, and a cat will find a way up whether you plan for it or not. Build the route and save the finish.

Why the ladder belongs inside the cabinet

Cats scratch what they climb. Leave a bare sideboard and the doors get vertical tracks within weeks. A ladder routed through the carcass, with grip steps cut into the back panel, gives a clear path from floor to top. The cat uses it, the doors stay clean, and you don't trip over a freestanding tree in the living room.

It also keeps the cat off the TV console wires, which is the real win for most owners.

How we cut the climb

We build the sideboard with a hidden channel at the back, roughly 15cm wide, and fix angled plywood steps every 25 to 30cm. The top opens to a padded perch so the cat lands soft. The channel face is a flush panel from the front, so guests see a normal sideboard and only you know the secret stairs.

Step depth is about 12cm, enough for a confident jump. Too shallow and the cat misses; too deep and it blocks the storage behind.

Materials that cope with claws

Plywood for the steps is tough and takes the nail marks without splitting. A laminate skin on the visible parts resists scratch better than raw timber.

Solid wood steps feel nicer under the paw but show claw marks openly. Use it if you like the worn look, skip it if you want clean lines.

MDF for the channel face is fine if painted, but the steps themselves should be plywood, MDF chips at the edge where the claw catches.

Laminate on the outer doors is the claw-proof choice, pair it with the internal plywood ladder and the piece survives a busy cat.

Cost and the build timeline

A sideboard with an integrated cat ladder costs on average S$900 to S$2,200 depending on size and the perch finish. That's within the S$30k to S$70k whole-home reno range most owners plan, and it replaces both a sideboard and a separate cat tree.

From measure to install, about 6 to 10 weeks as part of the living-room carpentry. The ladder is cut during the build, so decide on it before the workshop starts, not after.

Custom Furniture and your building

Custom Furniture by the sideboard is internal, so HDB approval isn't needed. In a condo the MCST won't object to a cabinet, but keep the unit fixed to the wall so a climbing cat doesn't tip it. During a BTO's one-year defect liability period, flag any wall crack where the sideboard anchors, because that cover ends and the builder walks away.

For resale, a hidden cat feature is a talking point, not a dealbreaker. Buyers with pets lean in; others just see a smart sideboard. Either way the doors stay unmarked, which helps the viewing.

Your cat will climb something, the question is what. Build the ladder into the sideboard and the perch becomes theirs, the doors stay yours, and the living room loses the plastic tree you were hiding behind the sofa. Measure the cabinet, cut the steps, and let the cat take the route you designed.
