Custom Furniture for dresser: Fixing a Scratched Door Face
Custom Furniture for a dresser often means a laminate or wood door face, and a scratched one is fixable at home without swapping the whole panel. The right repair depends on the surface, so check what you're dealing with first.
Dressers in Singapore bedrooms are usually laminate over plywood, sometimes solid wood in older pieces. A scratch from a ring, a toy or a moved chair is common, and most marks are shallower than they look. You rarely need a carpenter for a surface fix.
Know your door face
Before you touch anything, work out the material. The method for laminate is different from solid wood, and using the wrong product can make it worse.
Laminate. A printed plastic layer over a board. Scratches sit on the surface and don't go into grain.
Solid wood or veneer. Real grain that you can feel with a fingernail. Veneer is thin, so don't sand it hard.
Painted MDF. Smooth and flat, common on budget pieces. Chips show the grey board underneath.
Custom Furniture repair steps that work
For light laminate marks, start simple and escalate only if needed:
Clean first. Wipe with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. Half of what looks like a scratch is just a smear.
Hide with a marker. A wax filler stick or furniture marker in the door's colour fills a shallow line. Rub along the grain, then buff with a soft cloth.
Fill deeper cuts. Use a matching paste filler, let it set, and wipe the excess. A clear wax on top blends the sheen.
For solid wood, a little tinted polish or a wax stick in the grain direction usually does it. Avoid heavy sanding on a veneer face.
When to call the workshop
If the door is cracked through, or a laminate face has lifted at the edge, a home fix won't hold. The carpenter can replace just that panel, which is far cheaper than a new dresser.
A single replacement door face runs roughly S$80 to S$250 by size and finish. Much less than a full unit, and it keeps the rest of the piece you already like.
Cost, time and prevention
DIY repair costs under S$30 in markers and filler. A workshop panel takes about 6 to 10 weeks if it's made to match your existing carpentry, since they colour-match on site.
Stop the next scratch by adding felt buffers where items rest against the door, and keep a small gap between the dresser and the chair. In our humidity, a stable piece also means fewer bumps from swelling wood.
HDB and resale note
A scratched dresser is your own wear, not a defect, so the one-year defect liability period on a new flat won't cover it. Fix it yourself or pay the workshop.
On resale, a visibly repaired door beats a deeply scratched one. Buyers read surface marks as neglect, so a tidy fix quietly helps the viewing.

We fixed a long scratch on our laminate dresser with a marker and a buff, and you'd never spot it now. Took ten minutes and saved the cost of a new panel. Small scuffs are just part of living in a home, and most of them give in to a bit of care.
