Internal layout that matches real wardrobes

The typical mistake is mirroring the same shelves on both sides, which leaves the husband with empty hanging space and the wife with no room for slippers. Draw the contents first. A useful split: his wardrobe is 60 percent drawers (he folds), hers is 60 percent hanging (she hangs), and both get a single pull-out tray for belts, scarves and the watch roll. Shoe shelves at 30 centimetre spacing take most pairs; boot space needs a taller bay, so give her side one open double-height slot.

Soft-close hinges are not a luxury here — two wardrobes opening into a narrow platform means doors swing into the walkway, and a slam at midnight is the fastest way to lose bedroom peace. Budget for soft-close on every door and drawer; it adds perhaps S$300 to S$600 to the whole job and pays back every night.

Material, height and the HDB lines

Mind the rules. HDB will not let you raise the platform over the bomb shelter door or seal the shelter, so if your master bedroom backs onto the shelter, keep the platform low and leave the frame clear. Do not hack the wall to widen the wardrobe — structural walls stay, and a carpenter can work within the room's existing footprint. Condo MCSTs care less about the bedroom but will still flag noisy works outside the 9am to 5pm weekday window, so schedule the install accordingly.

Lead time and the order of works

Carpentry lead time is six to ten weeks, and a platform with split wardrobes is one of the longer jobs because it is essentially the whole bedroom in one build. Order it after the flooring and the air-con trunking are done, not before, or you will be cutting the platform around pipes that should have come first.
