Custom Furniture in bedroom: Rounding Every Sharp Edge
Custom Furniture in the bedroom feels safer when every sharp corner is rounded, especially with toddlers or elderly folk moving about at night.
Bedroom carpentry sits where we are at our most unguarded, half awake and barefoot. A square wardrobe edge at hip height or a pointed study table corner is a real knock risk. Rounding those edges costs little at the build stage and spares you a nasty bruise or worse. Here is what to ask your carpenter for and why it matters.
Which edges to round first
Start with anything at 60 to 110cm off the floor, the band where hips and heads meet furniture in the dark. Wardrobe ends and dresser corners lead the list.
In a 4-room BTO bedroom of roughly 90sqm total, the master often holds the wardrobe and a study nook. Round both, not just one.
Don't forget the bedside ledge and the open shelf above the headboard. Those catch shins and foreheads more than you'd think.
Custom Furniture finishes that soften the room
Ask for a 10 to 20mm radius on exposed corners. It looks smooth, not rounded like a kindergarten, and still takes the sting out of a bump.
For a study table, a bullnose front edge is kinder than a crisp 90-degree lip. Plywood with laminate rounds cleanly; solid wood needs careful sanding and oil.

Choose soft-close on every drawer and door so nothing slams onto small fingers. Pair rounded edges with anti-pinch hinges for a child's room.
Use the same laminate on the rounded edge as the face. A mismatched strip shows the moment light hits it, so build the curve from one board.
Materials, cost and timing
Rounding edges adds roughly S$150 to S$500 to a bedroom run, depending on how many corners and the finish. It is a small premium for daily safety.
Plywood with laminate rounds well and holds the curve. MDF can round too but swells if a drink seeps in, so keep it away from the bedside.
From measure to install, allow about 6 to 10 weeks. Bundle rounding into the full bedroom build so the whole room matches.
HDB and condo notes
Rounding edges is internal work HDB permits without approval. Just don't hack the structural wall or box in a window to do it.
Condo MCST by-laws rarely touch internal bedroom finish, but if your wall backs a neighbour, light fixing is fine and rounding changes nothing structural.
The 1-year defect liability period covers the build's joinery. If a rounded edge splits early, raise it with the carpenter while it is still covered.
Upkeep and resale
Wipe edges with a damp cloth and check the laminate lip yearly. A lifting strip catches skin, so re-glue at the first sign.
Rounded edges help resale with family buyers and the elderly market. It reads as a cared-for home, though it won't add a line to the price on its own.
If your bedroom has little ones or older folk, round the corners from day one. It is a small ask at the drawing stage and a quiet kind of care you feel every night. Tell the carpenter the radius you want and check it before install.
