Custom Furniture in lobby: A Spice Rack to the Ceiling
Custom Furniture in the lobby can be a slim spice rack built right up to the ceiling, turning dead vertical space at the entrance into everyday storage. The win is reaching the things you use daily without losing a single drawer elsewhere.
The lobby is the entry foyer of a flat. In HDB it's the small landing before the main door opens into the home; in a condo it's often a wider foyer. Either way it's narrow, so going up the wall is the only way to add storage without blocking the path.
Why go all the way up
Most lobbies get a shoe cabinet and nothing else. That leaves two metres of empty wall above it. A floor-to-near-ceiling rack uses that height for spices, packets and the odds and ends that never fit a kitchen drawer.
Build it with these points in mind:
Shallow depth. Keep the rack 12 to 15cm deep so it doesn't jut into the walkway. Spice jars and soup packets sit fine at that depth.
Tiered shelves. Step the shelves so the back row isn't hidden. You should see every label at a glance.
Easy reach. Reserve the bottom two shelves for daily use and the top for backup stock you grab with a step stool.
Custom Furniture materials for a hot entry
The lobby sits near the door, so it cops the afternoon heat when you come in. Laminate over plywood is the safe pick: it won't warp and it wipes clean of the occasional knocked jar.
Solid wood looks rich but needs care near a sunny entrance, and MDF swells if a bottle leaks. Plywood with a good edge band lasts and stays light enough to fix to the wall without heavy anchors.
Cost, build time and ceiling rules

A full-height lobby rack runs roughly S$400 to S$1,000 by width and finish. It's a small job next to a full reno, which for a 4-room HDB of about 90sqm averages S$30k to S$50k.
Measure to install takes about 6 to 10 weeks if it's part of a bigger carpentry order, or faster as a standalone piece. Tell the workshop the exact ceiling height, since HDB flats vary by a few centimetres.
Mind the false ceiling. HDB flats have sprinkler heads and the building rules don't let you box them in or hang weight from the false ceiling grid. Stop the rack just below the true ceiling and anchor into the concrete or partition above the false ceiling line.
Condo lobby considerations
In a condo, the foyer is yours but the MCST may restrict drilling into shared walls or altering the entrance face. Keep the rack inside your unit footprint and check the by-laws before you fix anything to a wall that borders the corridor.

Renovation noise is usually weekdays only, so book the install accordingly.
Keeping it tidy and useful
Group spices by use, not by alphabet. Put the ones you reach for at eye level and the baking extras up top. Wipe the shelves every month so oil from packets doesn't build up.
A ceiling-high rack also lifts the look of a plain entry. It reads as a deliberate feature rather than a bare wall with a lone shoe cabinet.
We built ours to just under the ceiling and it quietly took over from three kitchen drawers. The lobby finally earns its keep, and I stopped tripping over the step stool because the daily stuff sits within arm's reach. Small change, real relief.
