Custom Furniture in study: A Mail Slot in the Door

For a study that survives working from home, Custom Furniture should solve interruptions before storage. A door slot sounds odd until someone knocks while you are on a call, but it works because it removes the reason to open the door.

The common room is 7 to 9 sqm, so plan around that

In a 4-room HDB flat of roughly 90 sqm, the study is usually a common bedroom of about 7 to 9 sqm; a 5-room at roughly 110 sqm gives a slightly larger option. Condominium layouts often label a tight room as a study, sometimes under 6 sqm. At that size one wall gets the desk, one gets storage, one has the window, and the fourth has the door. Face the window if you can bear the glare, or sit perpendicular to it rather than with your back to a silhouette, since a window behind you turns every call into a silhouette.

A slot in the door: small idea, large effect

Cut a horizontal aperture roughly 250 to 300mm wide and 40 to 60mm tall into the door leaf at around 900 to 1,100mm from the floor. Do not cut a hollow-core door without confirming a solid rail, or the honeycomb core sags; a fire-rated door, common on condominium and shelter entries, cannot be modified at all, so a solid timber or solid-core leaf is the right candidate.

Desk depth, height and the monitor question

• Desk depth 600mm is the minimum for one monitor; 700mm with a 27-inch or dual screens.
• Desk height 720–750mm for a fixed top; sit-stand frames need a clear run and cannot be boxed in at the sides.
• Leave 700mm knee width per person, 1,200mm if two share the run.
• A monitor arm needs a top at least 18mm thick with a clear rear edge; tell the carpenter first.
• Overhead shelving should start 450mm above the desk, or you will hit your head.

Custom Furniture for cables, printers and the paper nobody expected

Every home office generates three problems: cable mess, an ugly printer, and accumulating paper. Deal with cables by specifying a tray under the desk top, at least 100mm deep, with a power strip inside it. For the printer, build a pull-out shelf on full-extension runners inside a closed cabinet. For paper, one 400mm-deep cabinet with adjustable shelves beats three open shelves, which collect objects rather than documents.

Material matters. Moisture-resistant plywood for carcasses holds fixings under load; MDF for sprayed door fronts if you want a painted finish, accepting it must stay dry. A solid timber top moves with humidity, so let it expand rather than screw it rigid.

Sound: what carpentry can and cannot fix

Joinery will not soundproof a room, but it reduces the two things that ruin calls: flutter echo off bare walls, which a full wall of books or a pinboard absorbs, and the gap under the door, where most noise from the flat arrives. A brush or drop-down seal at the door bottom costs little and beats foam. Real isolation needs mass and decoupled construction, outside furniture scope and MCST approval.

Permits, sockets and getting the trades in order

Run extra sockets before the carpenter arrives; a study wants six to eight outlets plus a data point, and retrofitting after a built-in desk means trunking or dismantling. HDB requires the renovation permit, with the contractor in HDB's Directory of Renovation Contractors and noisy work on weekdays only. In a condominium the MCST wants an application, forbids hacking structural walls, and limits noisy works to roughly 9am to 5pm on weekdays. BTO owners have three to four years between launch and key collection to plan the room.

Lead time, defects and the year after moving in

Carpentry takes six to ten weeks from drawings to installation, and the study is often scheduled last; push back if you work from home from day one. A study set-up usually falls in the low four figures, within a whole-home budget of S$30,000 to S$70,000. A one-year defect warranty is standard; load the desk fully in the first month and raise anything that moves while it is the carpenter's problem.
