A Singapore HDB kitchen carpenter learns early that most HDB kitchens are not large. A 3-room flat gives you a kitchen around 2 metres of counter, a 4-room around 2.4 to 3 metres, and even a 5-room rarely exceeds 3.5 metres of usable length. The skill is not fitting more cabinets, it is fitting the right ones so the room cooks well instead of just looking full. These are layouts that work in tight Singapore kitchens.

The galley that actually flows

The galley, two runs facing each other, is the honest answer for narrow kitchens. Put the sink and cooktop on one wall and prep storage on the other, with at least 1.2 metres between. A carpenter who squeezes a dishwasher beside the sink on the same run saves the opposite wall for pure storage. The mistake is breaking the work triangle across a walkway, which turns a small kitchen into an obstacle course.

For very tight flats, a single-wall layout with a narrow trolley as the second surface keeps the floor clear. The trolley is not a gimmick, it is where you land hot pans when the counter is full, and it rolls away when guests come.

Building up instead of out

When the floor is short, the carpenter builds height. Full-height cabinets to the ceiling take the dead space above the top row and turn it into seasonal storage: the steamer you use twice a year, the festive plates, the spare rice cooker. In a 2.6 metre ceiling flat built after 2020, that vertical run can add the equivalent of a full base cabinet of space without touching the floor plan.

Corner cabinets are where small kitchens waste the most. A blind corner with two doors loses a third of the cabinet to dead space. A carousel or a pull-out le Mans fitting recovers it, and a good carpenter prices these fittings openly rather than hiding them as "accessories".

Details that free up the counter

Mount the microwave in a cabinet instead of on the counter. Run a power point inside the appliance garage so the blender and toaster live behind a door. Use the back of the service yard door for a slim rack. None of these are expensive, and together they return a metre of clear counter in a kitchen that had none.

Lighting helps a small room feel bigger. Under-cabinet strips remove the shadows that make a galley feel like a tunnel, and a single warm downlight over the island draws the eye outward instead of at the wall.

Siting the appliances for the tight room

In a kitchen under 3 metres, the fridge placement decides the rest of the plan. Put it at the end of a run rather than in the middle, so the work triangle stays an L and not a zigzag you walk every meal. A front-load washer in the service yard next door should face the kitchen so you move wet things in one step, not across the flat. The carpenter who asks how you actually cook, not just what you want to store, places the appliances where the room flows instead of where the brochure shows them, and that single choice frees more floor than any extra cabinet ever could.

Small kitchens punish wasted millimetres and reward honest planning. Give the carpenter your real cooking habits, not a magazine layout, and the room will feel larger than its floor area says.
