Custom Furniture for Bedrooms: Under-bed Drawers Done Well
Custom Furniture makes under-bed storage actually work instead of becoming a jam of dusty plastic boxes. Build proper drawers into the bed base and you gain a full set of shallow pull-outs for linen, off-season clothes and the kids' old uniforms, all on castors and easy to reach.
Why Loose Boxes Fail
Most people shove flat containers under a ready-made bed and forget them. They slide crooked, collect hair, and you end up kneeling on the floor to dig. In a 4-room HDB bedroom around 90 sqm the floor space is tight, so hidden storage under the bed earns its keep. The trick is a **fixed base with glided drawers**, not loose tubs.
Get the basics right first:

- Raise the bed 30 to 40cm so drawers have real depth.
- Use full-extension runners so the drawer comes all the way out.
- Split the length into three or four drawers, not one long one.
Custom Furniture Build Approach
We build the bed frame as a solid plywood box with **soft-close metal runners** rated for the load. The drawers sit on the sides and the foot, leaving the head clear for a headboard. A gas-lift version lifts the whole mattress if you'd rather have one deep cavity, but drawers are easier day to day.
Steps on site:
- Measure mattress size and decide drawers on one or both sides.
- Set the frame height so the room still feels open.
- Fit anti-tip brackets if the bed sits against a wall.
- Label each drawer front so the family knows what goes where.
Materials That Survive Under the Bed
The base takes knocks, so **plywood** is our pick for strength and stability in our humidity. MDF bottoms are fine if the room stays dry, but we line drawers with laminate for a wipe-clean surface. Solid wood looks rich but costs more and can move with the weather. Laminate fronts keep the look light.
- Plywood: tough, stable, standard for the frame.
- Laminate: easy clean inside the drawers.
- MDF: smooth, keep it dry.
- Solid wood: warm, pricier, more care.
Cost, Timeline and Flat Rules
A custom bed with three to four drawers runs roughly S$1,800 to S$4,000 depending on size and finish. From measure to install, budget **6 to 10 weeks**: a week to survey, two to three weeks to design, then four to six weeks to build and fit.
HDB flats treat the bed as moveable furniture, but a built-in base fixed to the wall is built-in joinery, so keep it off structural walls and the bomb shelter, and don't block the window escape. New flats have a **1-year defect liability period** for wall issues, not the bed. Condo MCSTs usually allow it, with weekday noise limits and a renovation deposit held till handover.
Upkeep and Resale Upside
Vacuum the runners twice a year and don't overload a drawer or the runner sags. Well-made under-bed storage reads as "clever use of space" in photos, which helps a small bedroom show bigger to the next buyer.
When the floor under your bed is a graveyard of forgotten boxes, drawers built into the base turn that dead space into the most useful storage in the room.
