Custom Furniture by platform: A Wet Kit Dries Here

carpentry 15 min read 0 views

Custom Furniture by a platform bed can include a vented drying nook where wet swim and dive kits air out without dripping across the bedroom floor. If your kids train or you dive on weekends, a platform that hides a drying slot keeps the salt water and the smell out of the wardrobe.

Where the drying spot goes

A platform bed sits low and leaves a shadow gap at the foot or the side that is perfect for a slatted bay. In a 5-room HDB of about 110 sqm the master platform often runs the room width, so a 60 cm vented section at the end does the job without losing sleep space. The wet kit drops in, drips to a tray, and airs through the louvres.

We build the bay with a removable tray so you can empty the water and wipe it, then close the face when guests come.

Custom Furniture built around the platform

Custom Furniture shapes the drying bay to the kit you actually carry: fins, masks, and a 3 mm suit need a taller slot than a child's goggles. You set the depth to the platform, the vent pattern to the airflow, and the tray to slide out from the room side. A shop platform has no such bay, so the kit ends up on the bathroom floor instead.

Add a low rail above the bay for hangers and the suit dries standing, not puddling.

Materials that survive salt and damp

Near water, plywood with a marine-laminate face beats MDF, which swells if the tray overflows. Solid wood will stain and warp with chlorine and salt, so skip it here. Laminate on the tray and the bay walls wipes clean and will not hold the smell the way bare wood does.

Use a plastic or stainless tray, not a wood one, because the daily wet will rot a timber base within a season.

Cost, timeline, and HDB rules

A platform with a drying bay runs on average S$2,000 to S$4,500 for the platform plus the bay. From measure to install allow about 6 to 10 weeks, since the bay is built into the platform frame at the workshop. HDB rules keep it simple: inside the room, clear of the fire-rated door, no wall cutting for a floor platform.

Condo MCSTs may limit works hours and ask for a delivery deposit, so book the lift and the window ahead.

Care and resale value

Empty the tray weekly and wipe the laminate so salt does not sit. Check the bay hinges at the one-year mark under the defect liability period; a sticky face is a free fix while covered. Keep the vent clear of the made bed so air flows.

A drying bay will not lift your resale price by a set figure, but it shows the home was built for real life, which a sporty buyer notices. The bedroom still reads as a bedroom, just a smarter one.

The diver we built this for had been draping a wet suit over the wardrobe and smelling it for days. The platform bay moved the drain and the dry into one hidden spot. Build the bay to the kit you use, not the one you hope to, and the platform earns its height.
