Map the yard's real jobs

A BTO service yard handles washing, drying, cleaning gear, and often the water heater. Build for all of it so nothing crowds the kitchen.

Get the measurements exact

Machine sizes vary, so measure your chosen washer and dryer before the carpenter cuts. A 5kg and a 10kg front loader need very different gaps.

1. Confirm machine width and depth from the spec sheet.
2. Leave 5cm behind for hoses and the power point.
3. Allow 2cm each side so the units slide in clean.
4. Build the counter at 85cm for a comfortable folding height.

A few centimetres planned now saves a rebuild later when the machine won't fit.

Handle the BTO rules and defects

The yard has the water point, the electrical points, and sometimes the DB box, so coordinate with HDB's defect period. Report any leak or faulty point within the 1-year liability window before carpentry covers it.

Don't hack the floor trap or the structural walls. A carpenter who knows BTO flats will route cabinets around the pipes instead of through them.

2. Use a louvre door on the dryer housing if the layout allows it.
3. Route the exhaust to the existing vent, never into the closed cabinet.
4. Wipe the counter after each load to stop water rings and lint build.

With air moving, the yard stays dry and the laundry actually gets done faster, not slower.
